Chrysler . How to Change the Brakes on a Chevy UplanderThe Chevy Uplander is engineered to exceed the standards for safe stopping distance established by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The anti-lock braking system relies upon the proper usage and maintenance of the braking system to uphold those standards throughout the life of the vehicle. The brake lines need to be bled at regular intervals, the rotors should be inspected for scoring, and the brake pads need replacing at the first sign of significant wear. The brake pad indicators on the pads will cause a "squeal" when the pad surface is at a level that warrants replacement. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Tire iron Jack Jack stands 13 millimeter wrench 10 millimeter wrench Drip pan C-clamp or vise-grip pliers DOT 3 brake fluid Step by Step : 1 Park the Uplander in an area that will allow for access on both sides of the vehicle. Place the transmission in "Park," point the front tires forward and place tire blocks behind the rear tires. 2 Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels with the socket on the tire iron. 3 Place the jack beneath the frame near the front bumper and lift the vehicle. Place jack stands beneath the frame and lower the vehicle onto the stands. The tires should be clear of the road surface while the Chevy is supported by the jack stands. 4 Remove the lug nuts and pull the wheels from the wheel bolts. 5 Turn the steering wheel to the right to allow for better access to the left brake. 6 Remove the two caliper bolts located on the right side of the caliper. The caliper is the metal apparatus that surrounds a portion of the rotor. Use a 13 millimeter wrench for these bolts. 7 Open the brake fluid bleed valve located near the upper-most caliper bolt with a 10 millimeter wrench. Two full turns on the valve will open it. Place a drip pan beneath the brake. 8 Slide the brake pads from the sides of the caliper. The pads are connected to the sides (or walls) of the caliper by thin metal clips. 9 Place a C-clamp or vise-grip pliers against the caliper piston and the wall from which it protrudes. Screw the C-clamp (or squeeze the vise-grip pliers) to force the caliper piston against the side of the caliper. The brake fluid in the caliper will be expelled through the bleed valve and into the drip pan. The piston is a ring that extends from one side of the caliper. Remove the C-clamp when the piston is flush with the side of the caliper. Step by Step : 10 Slide the new pads onto the walls of the caliper. The pads will face each other when installed properly. Close the bleed valve with the 10 millimeter wrench. Step by Step : 11 Place the caliper onto the rotor and screw in the caliper bolts using the 13 millimeter wrench. Step by Step : 12 Turn the steering wheel to the left to gain access to the right brake. Replace the brake pads on the right brake. Turn the steering wheel so that the wheels are pointing forward. Step by Step : 13 Place the wheels back onto the wheel bolts and screw on the lug nuts by hand. Lift the Uplander with the jack, remove the jack stands and return the vehicle to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron socket. Step by Step : 14 Press the brake pedal fully, release and press it again. This will return brake fluid to the caliper that was expelled during the opening of the piston. Step by Step : 15 Open the hood. Remove the cap to the master cylinder and fill the reservoir with DOT 3 brake fluid until the level of the fluid is within 1/4 inch of the top of the container. Replace the master cylinder cap. Tips & Warnings DOT 3 brake fluid is the recommended fluid for the Chevy Uplander. The DOT ratings signify the boiling point for brake fluid, ranging from DOT 2 to DOT 5.
Chrysler . How to Change a Mustang's RotorsThe Ford Mustang is one of the easiest cars on the road to modify. With companies such as Ford, Ford Racing and a slew of others creating aftermarket parts for Mustangs, it is a wonder there are any stock ones on the road. One of the first upgrades you should undertake if you plan to modify your Mustang is brakes. While you do not need to go full tilt and replace the entire brake system, you can see an improvement in brake performance by simply installing high-performance pads and rotors. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Safety glasses 2 wheel chocks Lug wrench Jack 2 jack stands Drip tray Brake clean Socket set Replacement rotors New pads (optional) White lithium grease (optional) Step by Step : 1 Set the parking brake, put on your safety glasses and place the wheel chocks in the front and back of the left rear tire. 2 Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels, using the lug wrench. 3 Place the jack under the front end of the Mustang, and lift it up until you can slide the jack stands under the frame on either side. Once the jack stands are in place, slowly lower the jack down, making sure the frame rests securely on the stands. 4 Remove the left front lug nuts and wheel. 5 Push the drip tray under the brake assembly, and spray it down thoroughly with brake clean to get as much brake dust out as possible. 6 Use the socket set to remove the brake caliper bolts. Once the bolts are out, pull the caliper up and away from the rotor, then rest it on the lower control arm or another piece of suspension so that the caliper does not hang from the brake line. 7 Pull the rotor off and slip on the new one. 8 Reinstall the brake caliper, wheel and lug nuts. 9 Repeat Steps 4 through 8 on the right front. If you plan to do the rears, lower the front end off the jack stands, move the wheel chocks to the front, jack the front end up and place the jack stands under the rear axle--then repeat Steps 4 through 8 on each side in the rear. Step by Step : 10 Put the car back on the ground and tighten all the lug nuts securely. Tips & Warnings It is always best to install new pads with new rotors. In the event you want to replace the pads, remove the retaining clip holding them into the caliper, slide the old pads out, clean the caliper slides and lubricate them with white lithium grease; then put the new pads in and reinstall the retaining clip. Do this after Step 7. *Until 1992, a refrigerant called CFC-12 (commonly called Freon) was standard on most vehicles. When it was found to contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer, CFC-12 was phased out and replaced by R-134a. Production of CFC-12 ceased at the end of 1995, and, although the stuff can be recycled, supplies may be limited. If your vehicle was built before 1992, you may have trouble getting Freon if you need to replace the air conditioner's refrigerant. Conversions to an alter native refrigerant (R-134a) are expensive, so think about this fact before buying a pre-1992 used vehicle or undertaking expensive repairs on one you already own. Chapter 14 has suggestions on extending the life of your air conditioner and tips on servicing it and finding out what it would cost to convert from CFC-12 Freon to R-I34a refrigerant. Chapter 9 400

But take heart; you don't have to be a mechanical genius to understand it (or I wouldn't be writing about it!). For starters, think of the transmission as a communication system that takes messages from you about whether you want to go forward or backward — and at what speed — and passes them on to the wheels. Transmission systems vary from one vehicle to another. With a manual transmission (sometimes called a standard transmission), you shift into the Chrysler . Lexus GS. * proper gear at the proper time yourself, with an automatic transmission, the shifting is done for you. But the result is the same: Whether you have an auto matic or a manual transmission, the transmission transmits power from the engine and directs it to the wheels. But it doesn't do the job alone, it's part of a system that has several components, commonly known as the drive train. This chapter takes you for a ride on the drive train. By the end of the line, the transmission and its related parts should no longer be a mystery and Chapter 17, which deals with maintaining and troubleshooting the transmission, should easily become familiar territory. They must also know how fast to turn, and they must be supplied with extra power for starting, climbing hills, and pulling heavy loads. All these things are accomplished via the drive train. By knowing what each part does and how it relates to the other parts of the drive train, you can trace the flow of power from the engine to the wheels. Here's an interesting way to look at how the drive train functions: Imagine that you are the captain of a ship.
